SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Poisonous chlorine gas injured 19 people and forced the evacuation of more than 500 shoppers today in the second gas attack on a shopping center this week.

The Eastgate Shopping Center in Bondi Junction quickly filled with chlorine fumes shortly before 11 a.m., fire brigade officers said.

Authorities discovered the gas coming from a glass jar lying on the floor in the middle of the complex.

On Wednesday, four people were treated for minor respiratory problems after a chlorine gas device went off in Sydney’s Randwick Village shopping center.

Chlorine gas is a strong irritant that forms an acid when mixed with water. It irritates the nose, throat, lungs and eyes.

Authorities did not release any possible motives for the attack.
