Woman Apparently Spends Two Weeks With Bodies of Sons
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ A woman apparently spent two weeks alone in her house with the decomposing bodies of her two young sons before the deaths were discovered by authorities, police say.
Police broke into the house in suburban Worthington on Tuesday after a relative asked them to check on the woman. Officers said they found the woman, identified as Lorene L. Smith, sitting in a living room chair.
Her two children, Michael Arno, 5, and Jordan Arno, 3, were found dead in separate bedrooms. They were dressed in night clothes and bed sheets covered their faces, police said Wednesday.
Franklin County Coroner William R. Adrion said decomposition makes it difficult to determine the cause of death.
Ms. Smith was placed under psychiatric care. No charges were filed against her, police said.
It is believed the woman stayed in the house with the bodies without leaving for about two weeks, police sources who were not identified told the Dispatch, and neighbors confirmed they had not seen the children for that length of time.
The woman’s cousin, Paul Richardson, told the newspaper that she was married about five years ago to a wealthy California businessman and received a divorce in 1985. He said she reportedly received about $1 million in a cash settlement.
