First Stage Theatre holding auditions for ‘Newsies’

HUNTINGTON - First Stage Theatre Company will hold auditions for the musical “Newsies” from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church at 5747 East Pea Ridge Road in Huntington.

Auditions are open to young people, ranging from high school seniors to second graders. Those auditioning may arrive anytime during those hours. Be prepared to sing 30 seconds from a song of your choice. Songs from musicals are preferred. Along with a musical portion, actors and actresses will be asked to read some lines from a provided script. A short dance is also taught for the audition. First Stage Theatre Company recommends wearing clothes and shoes appropriate for dancing.

The musical is based on the beloved Disney film and the Broadway musical. It will be presented in March 2019 at Huntington High School’s auditorium. Dance rehearsals for the “Newsies” will be once a week in the fall. Full show rehearsals won’t begin until December 2018.

Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, “Newsies” is the story of a band of teenage paperboys and girls. When titans of publishing raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, newsies from across the city rally to strike and fight for what’s right! Inspired by a true story, the musical features classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” it’s packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family.

“Newsies” is part of the 29th season for Huntington’s long-running children’s theatre.
