DNA search leads to arrest in 2006 California sword slaying

January 25, 2019

LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Police say they’ve solved the 12-year-old killing of a Southern California man who was ambushed and stabbed to death with a sword.

On Thursday, police in the San Diego suburb of La Mesa announced the arrest of Zachary Bunney of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Police believe Bunney killed 47-year-old Scott Martinez in 2006 as the victim walked into his own apartment. The San Diego Union-Tribune says police didn’t discuss a motive.

Investigators identified Bunney through a cutting-edge DNA search technique — the same kind that led to last year’s capture of the suspected Golden State Killer.

Detective Ryan Gremillion says until Bunney was identified, his name hadn’t even come up in the investigation.

He was arrested on Jan. 10 in Oregon and awaits extradition. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney.
