NEW YORK (AP) _ Al and Tipper Gore launched a 12-city tour to promote their two new books examining the American family _ but made no mention of another possible run for the White House.

Some fans who lined up at a Barnes & Noble in Manhattan to have their books signed encouraged the former vice president, who ran against George W. Bush in 2000, to run again in 2004, but he politely deflected the talk.

``You’re very kind. Thank you,″ he told one woman.

The Gores were making the first stop of a tour to promote ``Joined at the Heart″ and ``The Spirit of Family,″ which hit bookstores Tuesday.

``Joined at the Heart″ profiles a diverse collection of 12 families the Gores have met over the years. ``The Spirit of Family″ is a collection of 260 photographs that chronicle the stages of life. Both books are published by Henry Holt and Co.

``We’ve been learning and wanting to share what we’ve learned for quite a while,″ Al Gore told the crowd before he began signing. ``And a year ago last January we suddenly had some free time on our hands.″

The Gores did not take questions from reporters.
