Authorities investigate inmate death in North Carolina jail
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities are looking into the fourth inmate death at a North Carolina county jail in 2018.
News outlets report the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said 52-year-old Jerome Thompson jumped from a general housing pod Wednesday night and suffered a fractured skull. Thompson underwent surgery but died Thursday morning.
Jail records show Thompson was arrested Wednesday on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges.
The sheriff’s office said 35-year-old Lavarchio Allen died last week after his arrest for breaking and entering and larceny. No further details were released. Authorities say 34-year-old Jermarcus McIlWaine died at the jail in June one day after he was arrested on drug charges.
Investigators said 39-year-old Kenneth Wayne Bigham committed suicide in the jail’s disciplinary detention unit in May.
