COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) _ Evers Burns scored 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting to help Maryland build a 23-point halftime lead, and the Terrapins cruised past Howard 109-69 Saturday night for their seventh straight victory.

Burns finished with 27 points, two short of his career high, and 10 rebounds. Kevin McLinton scored 21 points for Maryland (8-1), including 14 in the first half when the Terrapins shot 62 percent.

Maryland, off to its best start since 1984, begins its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule Tuesday at home against Georgia Tech.

Robert Riddick had 13 points for Howard (2-7), which has lost seven of eight games. The Bison, defending champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, have lost their three games this season against ACC foes Clemson, Virginia and Maryland by a combined 95 points.

With the score 6-6, Burns scored seven points in an 18-5 run. Moments later, freshman Johnny Rhodes hit a 3-pointer to start a 13-0 spurt that made it 43-17. Burns capped the spree with two technical foul shots, then followed a layup by Rhodes by scoring Maryland’s next eight points.

Rhodes’ 3-pointer just before the buzzer made it 56-33 at the half. The Bison made only 14 of 36 field goal attempts before halftime and committed 12 turnovers.

Successive 3-pointers by Riddick cut the gap to 72-52 with 12:32 left, but Burns had a pair of three-point plays in a 21-2 run that put the Terrapins up 93-54.

Burns made 10 of 13 shots before being replaced for good with 6:35 to go.
