Man Drowns in Wilmington’s Silver Lake
WILMINGTON -- A 19-year-old man drowned after he disappeared while swimming with relatives in Silver Lake on Wednesday, officials said.
First responders, who rushed to the scene at 5:30 p.m., were able to find the victim and provide life-saving efforts, according to an email from Meghan Kelly, a spokeswoman from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
“The victim was subsequently transported to Winchester Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” she stated.
The victim was underwater for about 30 minutes, official said.
Foul play is not suspected.
The DA’s office stated they will not release the name of the victim.
Bailey Webster, 15, who lives nearby, said she was watching from shore, near the Town Beach at Silver Lake, as emergency crews discovered the body in the water.
“They brought him to the shore,” Webster said. “The police and firefighters lifted him up and put him onto a cot and rushed him into the ambulance.”
Webster recalled hearing a woman scream when the missing 19-year-old was brought to shore.
“She screamed like in the movies,” said Webster, who said she was tearing up as the drama unfolded.
Other witnesses, who remained on scene long after the 19-year-old had been found, said the beach was packed on Wednesday.
A sign on the fence surrounding the Town Beach at Silver Lake states, “swim at own risk.”
According to the Wilmington town website, lifeguards were no longer on duty as of Aug. 12.
