Website to provide info on online sales tax fight

August 24, 2018

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire has set up a website for information about developments following a U.S. Supreme Court decision on collecting sales taxes from online shopping.

The ruling that states can require online retailers to collect sales tax on purchases in states where they don’t have a physical presence was a victory for states losing billions of dollars in revenue every year. But it was a potential blow to New Hampshire, which prides itself on having neither a sales nor income tax.

The Legislature defeated a bill to fight the practice.

The website is www.nheconomy.com/nosalestax and will be updated with information from state government agencies.

Gov. Chris Sununu said the attorney general’s office will gather information on efforts of other taxing jurisdictions to impose their sales and use tax obligations on New Hampshire businesses.
