WASHINGTON (AP) _ William H. Young, 56, was elected president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the union announced Tuesday.

A native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Young has been executive vice president of the 307,000-member union.

As president he succeeds Vincent R. Sombrotto, who had led the union for 24 years.

In the election for president, the union said Young defeated Michael L. Willadsen of Hartford, Conn., by a vote of 76,299 to 19,389.

Young resides in Bowie, Md.
