Cardiff draws 3-3 with West Brom in EPL
WEST BROMWICH, England (AP) — West Bromwich Albion was held to a 3-3 draw after a last-gasp equalizer by fellow struggler Cardiff in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The home side looked set to claim all three points when substitute Bifouma Koulossa converted deep into stoppage time. However, Mats Daehli struck in the fourth minute of added time to seal a vital point for the visitors.
Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stressed the importance of the point for his side as they look to remain in the top flight.
“Finally my boys got the luck they deserved. To get a point was very important because to have picked them up after a defeat would have been difficult.
“If we had lost this game then West Brom are away from us and we would not have been able to claw them back,” said the Norwegian.
The hosts got off to the perfect start when Morgan Amalfitano thumped a strike past Cardiff keeper David Marshall in the second minute — a contender for goal of the season.
Graham Dorrans doubled West Brom’s lead in the sixth, converting after Matej Vydra had laid the ball into the midfielder’s path.
Midfielder Jordon Mutch reduced the deficit on the half-hour mark with a long-range lob to rival Amalfitano’s earlier strike.
And the comeback had seemed complete when captain Steven Caulker headed in Gary Medel’s free kick in the 73rd - his fifth goal of the season, before the dramatic finish at the Hawthorns.
Cardiff stoppage-time goalscorer Daehli was delighted with his strike.
“I thought we deserved the goal because we played really well in second half. I had once chance before and missed it, so I kept thinking ‘I need another chance’. So I was so happy when I got it.”
“My players knew how important that point is. Now they can get more in the coming weeks,” Solskjaer added.
The draw leaves Cardiff in the relegation zone on 26 points, three adrift of Albion, having played a game more than the West Brom.
