Russian Cannibal Found Insane
MOSCOW (AP) _ A man accused of killing as many as 80 people, and eating at least some of them, was found insane Tuesday and committed to a high-security psychiatric hospital, a news report said.
A Kemerovo regional court in western Siberia ruled that Alexander Spesivtsev was insane, the news agency Interfax said.
Spesivtsev had previously spent time in a mental facility after being convicted of murdering his girlfriend. He was arrested in the fall of 1996, when police found two dismembered bodies in his apartment, as well as one young woman on the brink of death.
A search of Spesivtsev’s apartment revealed 80 bloodstained pieces of clothing, prosecutors said. They said tests established that none of them contained blood from anyone in Spesivtsev’s family.
There have been several cases of cannibalism reported in Russia in recent years. Andrei Chikatilo was convicted of murdering, mutilating and cannibalizing 52 people in Rostov-on-Don prior to his arrest in 1990. He was subsequently convicted and executed.
