Floods Hit Northern Bangladesh District

August 2, 1986

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) _ The Padma river spilled over its banks in northern Bangladesh, leaving more than 2,000 people homeless and destroying 12,000 acres of rice crops, a newspaper said today.

The Sangbad, a Bengali language daily, said the river flooded following rains on Thursday and Friday in the Chapainawabhganhj district 170 miles north of Dhaka.

About 50,000 homes suffered some water damage. Many people were trapped by high water and others were staying on rooftrops or in makeshift high structures.
