Burrell Wins Austrian Heptathlon

GOETZIS, Austria (AP) _ American Shelia Burrell won the women’s heptathlon in an international invitational meet in Austria on Sunday.

Burrell finished with 6,363 points. Sabine Braun of Germany was second with 6,299 points, and countrywoman Kathleen Gutjahr was third with 6,222.

Burrell’s victory was the eighth in the heptathlon by a U.S. athlete. Burrell’s result was the lowest winning total since 1984.

Roman Sebrle, the Czech world record holder, won the decathlon with 8,800. American Tom Pappas was second with 8,583 points, and Alexander Yurkov of Ukraine was third with 8,509.
