La Verdad wins Big A’s Distaff Handicap
NEW YORK (AP) — La Verdad defended her title in the $190,000 Distaff Handicap, easily dispatching three rivals Saturday in her season debut at Aqueduct.
After turning back an early challenge from Aireofdistinction, La Verdad rolled to a 5 1/4-length victory over Frivolity as the 1-5 favorite. The consistent 5-year-old trained by Linda Rice posted her 11th win in 17 starts while improving to 5 for 6 over Aqueduct’s main track.
“I can only hope she comes back and races as well as she has for the last year and a half for us,” Rice said.
Jose Ortiz was aboard for the six furlongs in 1:10 on the fast track.
La Verdad paid $2.60 and $2.10 while Frivolity returned $4.20.
There was no show wagering.
Mamdooha finished third, snapping her five-race winning streak.
