Nicaragua Volcano Spits Gas, Ash

November 22, 1999

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ The San Cristobal volcano has rumbled back to life, spitting clouds of gas and ash 10,000 feet into the air.

The eruption Sunday by the 5,775-foot volcano left a thin layer of gritty, gray volcanic ash on four nearby villages _ La Mora, Belen, La Bolsa, San Ysidro.

There were no reports of injury or destruction from the eruption, which the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies called ``a silent phase of activity″ at the volcano.

The civil defense commission said it would evacuate residents near the volcano, about 95 miles west of Managua, if the eruptions become more serious. San Cristobal has been dormant for five years.
