Holiday pushes trash collection back one day

September 4, 2018

Garbage collection in Fort Wayne will be delayed by one day because of the Labor Day holiday, City Councilman Tom Freistroffer reminded residents last week.

As is the case with other federal holidays, including July 4 and Christmas, all garbage collection will be pushed one day. There was no garbage collection Monday because of the holiday. Residents who typically have their garbage collected Monday will have it picked up today.

In the months since Red River took over a $5 million contract with the city of Fort Wayne for garbage collection, complaints have mounted over missed collections. City councilmen, frustrated over the number of calls they’ve received in the past nine months, have urged each resident who is missed to contact 311 to register a missed garbage collection. Residents can also report by going to www.cityoffortwayne.org.

Council members are still receiving complaints regarding missed collections, including several entire neighborhoods throughout the city.

According to performance numbers released in August, the city verified 1,803 out of 2,423 misses reported to 311.
