Players Dunk, Then Get Slammed
RUPERT, Idaho (AP) _ Four high school players angered over perceived abuse from their coach decided to take revenge by getting him ejected from a game by dunking in warmups.
They succeeded _ at their own expense. They were thrown off the team and suspended from school for three days.
According to the father of one of the players, Minico High School seniors Donovan Hartley, Corey Jurgensmeier, Aaron Hubsmith and Luke Trevino felt that coach Blair Garner had treated them harshly.
So they decided to get coach Garner ejected from Tuesday night’s game with Burley by dunking in warmups _ a technical foul against the team.
Garner was ejected because of the technicals, but the boys were taken off the roster for the Spartans’ 66-57 loss.
School officials called their act ``premeditated insubordination.″
A father of one of the boys, who did not want to be identified, said the players wanted to play for the assistant coaches. He said they believed they could not perform their best after being belittled by Garner.
The coach declined comment.
``The boys knew it was wrong and they felt terrible,″ the father said. ``They all accept the consequences.″
