Water system flushing is this week

September 23, 2018

La PORTE — The La Porte City Water Department has announced that fall water system flushing begins Sunday night and will continue through Thursday night from about 8 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Water system flushing is done at night to minimize inconvenience to customers. Discolored or rusty water may occur in some areas during flushing. Running the cold water tap for several minutes usually is enough to clear it up.

The water is safe to drink, but if you are doing laundry and the water enters your washer, do not dry the clothes. Washing the items again after the water clears normally takes care of the problem.

The objectives of this program are to maintain the high quality of water in the distribution system and to make sure that all fire hydrants are in working order. While flushing, all hydrants are lubricated and operated as well as assessed for maintenance or potential replacement.

The Water Department apologizes for any inconvenience that water system flushing may cause but reminds customers that they ultimately benefit from system flushing through the maintenance of water quality and fire protection capability.

Customers who have questions regarding water hydrant system flushing can call the Water Department at 326-9540. An operator is on duty 24 hours per day.

The first week of flushing will be predominantly on the north side in the areas around Pine Lake Avenue to the north and around the lakes and up to the Indiana Toll Road.
