COLLEGE: Scranton Grad Burgette Wins National Title

Liberty University’s Andrew Burgette won the national championship in the 157-pound weight class Saturday at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s championship tournament in Allen, Texas.

Burgette, a Scranton High School graduate, defeated Apprentice’s Chad Simmons (44-10) in the championship bout. Simmons was a two-time All-American and the runner-up at 157 pounds last season and led the NCWA in wins this season.

Burgette won two matches by technical fall to reach the championship bout. On Friday, he defeated Akron’s Joe Iacano, 17-1, and Stony Brook’s Jay Best, 18-0.

Burgette (35-6) placed eight at 157 pounds in the national championship last season for the Virginia school.

Softball

Lackawanna College swept a softball doubleheader over Cayuga Community College, winning 23-3 and 14-7 on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons (11-6) scored 15 runs in the first inning of the opener. Valley View graduate Lexis Chapman had a three-run triple in the inning and North Pocono graduate Alexandria Thoman drove in two runs with a single.

Jordyn Skoff hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap for Lackawanna. Gabrielle Vuocolo finished with three hits, including a double and a home run, and four RBIs for Lackawanna.

Stratford 9 16

At Hampton, Virginia, Stratford University pitchers held Penn State Scranton to six hits over two games to earn a doubleheader sweep.

Veronica Acevedo threw a two-hit shutout in the opener with four strikeouts for Stratford. In the second game, Jessica Duff and West Scranton graduate Morgan Dougherty each had a single and an RBI for Scranton (0-2).

Baseball

Jared Sharkey’s three-run homer in the eighth inning gave Wheaton a 7-4 win over Keystone College.

Ronald Medina gave Keystone a 4-3 lead with an RBI single in the sixth that scored Johann Paniagua. But Wheaton answered in the bottom of the inning as Nick Raposo’s RBI triple tied the game at 4.

Dakota McFadden singled and drove in two runs for Keystone (3-4).

Lackawanna 19 18

Corning 0 4

At Corning, New York, Zac Granger had three hits and three RBIs in the opener and Thylar Summarell had five hits and three RBIs in the nightcap as Lackawanna College rolled to a sweep.

Granger had two doubles and a home run in the opener and the Falcons (8-7) broke the game open with 11 runs in the fourth inning.

Summarell had a double and a triple in the second game and D.J. Staszak had a two-run triple.

Men’s lacrosse

Connor Kirkwood and Michael Elefonte each had three goals and an assist to lead the University of Scranton to an 11-10 win over Plattsburgh St.

Elefonte and Cole Lukasiewicz scored in a span of 1:44 in the fourth quarter to give the Royals an 11-9 lead.

Lukasiewicz and Tim Dolan each finished with two goals for Scranton (3-4).

Purchase 21, Keystone 1

At Purchase, New York, Dan Ohrem had 10 goals and two assists as Purchase College rolled to a win.

Ohrem had six goals in a 13-0 run by Purchase to start the game.

A.J. Hackenberg scored for Keystone (0-3).

Women’s lacrosse

Elena Gallo had her third hat trick of the season to lead the University of Scranton to a 14-6 win over Christopher Newport.

Scranton (5-1) led by one at halftime but scored eight straight goals to open the second half. Jill Henson had two goals and four assists for the Royals.
