Woman who fled country after husband’s slaying found guilty
WARREN, Ohio (AP) — A woman charged with killing her husband and fleeing to her native Brazil in 2007 has been found guilty of aggravated murder by an Ohio jury.
The Vindicator reports Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins said he was pleased with Thursday’s verdict against 54-year-old Claudia Hoerig but wouldn’t comment further. A continuing gag order prevents prosecutors and the defense from commenting on the case. Hoerig was returned to the U.S. in January 2018 after Brazil’s Supreme Court revoked her citizenship. She was accused of fatally shooting 43-year-old Karl Hoerig, an Air Force Reserve member and commercial pilot, at their Newton Falls home in 2007
Hoerig acknowledged killing him, but said it wasn’t premeditated and she’d been abused.
Jurors were told Hoerig bought a laser sight for her handgun before the shooting.
