Dash cam video shows SUV crash head-on into Highway Patrol cruisers after chase

BRATENAHL, Ohio – Dashboard camera video released Monday shows an SUV crash head-on into two State Highway Patrol cruisers at the end of a chase in Bratenahl.

The SUV’s driver and three Highway Patrol troopers suffered minor injuries in the crash that happened Thursday on Lakeshore Boulevard near Eddy Road, authorities said.

Rajon Hyche, 18, of Cleveland is charged with felonious assault, fleeing and eluding, receiving stolen property and cocaine possession in the Thursday incident, the Highway Patrol said.

He is currently in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Dashboard camera video shows a stolen SUV crash head-on into the two Highway Patrol cruisers, which had stopped side-by-side about 3:30 p.m. on Lakeshore Boulevard.

Several Highway Patrol troopers planned to set up stop sticks, but the chase reached the area before they could do that, Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Robert Sellers said Monday.

The chase began when a Highway Patrol trooper saw a 2017 Nissan Armada speed away from him on Interstate 90. The trooper grew suspicious and followed the SUV, and soon learned it had been reported stolen from Cleveland, Sellers said.

The chase continued along I-90 until the SUV’s driver exited the highway at Eddy Road. The SUV then turned onto Lakeshore Boulevard, where it crashed into the Highway Patrol cruisers.

It was the third time in six days that a Highway Patrol chase preceded a crash in Greater Cleveland. One of those chases ended before a crash.

On July 20, a Highway Patrol sergeant stopped chasing a car shortly before it crashed on Cleveland’s East Side. Driver Antonio Whitely, 30, and passenger Ashley Martin, 25, died after the crash, which also injured a 17-year-old boy.

The sergeant initially tried to stop the car when it ran a red light. He ended the chase when the car ran another red light, approximately 15 blocks from the spot it crashed into a utility pole, the Highway Patrol said in a news release.

On Wednesday, a car fleeing a Highway Patrol trooper crashed into a building on Detroit Avenue at West 75th Street in Cleveland. That chase lasted approximately one minute and reached a top speed of roughly 70 mph, Highway Patrol Lt. Neil Laughlin said.

The driver got out and ran from the car, but investigators have identified him and plan to file charges against him, Laughlin said. The Highway Patrol could not immediately provide an update on that case Monday afternoon.

The driver who ran from the car left behind a passenger, who suffered minor injuries.
