Retirement homes eyed for Huntertown area

September 25, 2018

More Yellow Retirement housing for seniors is coming to the Fort Wayne area.

Eighteen one-story attached homes the color of sunshine are planned for a site at 15022 Lima Road in Perry Township, according to applications filed with the Department of Planning Services.

According to Gregory Roberts, site engineer, the location already has a single duplex from earlier plans. It will be built out to 18 units in nine buildings after purchase of additional land and a home.

Being sought from the Allen County Plan Commission are a rezoning to multiple family residential and approval of the site’s development plan.

The developer is the same as other Yellow Retirement residences, J.R. Parent of Fort Wayne. The residences, designed for independent living, are handicapped-accessible and typically have one bedroom with a den, bathroom, kitchen, laundry facilities and a garage.

Yellow Retirement is also seeking rezoning and development plan approval for another proposed senior living project at 11128 Aboite Center Road in Aboite Township. The rezoning sought would take the land from agricultural (estates) to two-family residential.

The company plans to add two “upscale duplexes” to the approximately 1.5-acre property, Roberts said. Units would have stone exterior details, more space and high-end interior appointments, he said.

The company now plans for the units to be sold rather than rented, as are other Yellow Retirement units, Roberts said.

Yellow Retirement has a dozen locations in Fort Wayne, according to the company’s website, which lists communities in Auburn, Columbia City, Garrett, Huntington, Kendallville, Marion, New Haven, Ossian, Warsaw and Woodburn.

The plans will be considered in a public hearing at 1 p.m. Oct. 11 in Room 35 of Citizens Square.
