Man dies after being shot while driving, crashing into other car in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — An 18-year-old man died Friday after being shot while driving a stolen car, causing him to crash into another car, according to police and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.

Devin Allen, 18, died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to police reports.

The shooting happened about 10:40 p.m. Thursday on East 117th Street in Kinsman Avenue. It’s the 79th homicide in Cleveland this year. There were 74 at this point in 2018.

Before the shooting, Allen was hanging out with a group of people on East 112th Street and Buckeye Avenue and was “highly intoxicated,” police reports say. He was upset about a dispute between his neighborhood friends and a group based out of East 117th Street and Luke Avenue, police reports say.

Allen jumped in a car— a black 2013 Ford Taurus that was stolen from someone in Euclid— and dropped off two friends on East 123rd Street before he sped toward the rival neighborhood, police reports say. He had at least one gun inside the car, police reports say.

Allen picked up a friend on his way. A group of about four of Allen’s friends got in a car and tried to chase after Allen to “stop him from making poor decisions,” according to police reports.

Someone fired a single gunshot into Allen’s car, police reports say. The bullet ripped through the car and hit Allen in the head.

Allen tried to swerve to avoid gunfire and crashed his car into a 26-year-old woman’s car. She had nothing to do with the dispute and was treated at University Hospitals for injuries to her head and hands and was released.

Allen was taken to University Hospitals, where he was on life support until Friday, police reports say.

Officers noted in police reports that both cars sustained “heavy damage” from the crash. Investigators found a large amount of blood inside the car Allen was driving, along with a bullet hole in the driver’s side door. They also found $103 and marijuana inside the car.

The passenger inside Allen’s car ran from the area after the shooting and police have not located him. No arrests have been made in the case.

Officers found one fired bullet casing at the intersection.
