Puerta Advances at Swiss Open
GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) _ Eighth-seeded Mariano Puerta of Argentina defeated France’s Arnaud Di Pasquale between raindrops Tuesday in the opening round of the Swiss Open.
Taking advantage of a brief interval between downpours, Puerta, defeated Di Pasquale on the damp clay 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round.
Rain washed out the first day of the event, and allowed only two matches in the second, with former champion Felix Mantilla of Spain winning the other singles.
Mantilla, who won the clay-court title in 1997, easily disposed of fellow Spaniard Fernando Vicente 6-1, 6-4.
