32 People Killed in Bus Accident
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ A bus carrying farm workers overturned and landed upside down in a shallow dam today in eastern South Africa, killing 32 people.
Police spokesman Lt. Dup du Plooy said the bodies of 17 men and 15 women were recovered by police divers. Eight passengers were injured and 28 escaped unhurt.
Police believe the driver lost control before the bus left the road and plunged into a farm dam in Lothair, about 120 miles east of Johannesburg. The bus landed on its roof and was submerged up to its wheels.
Antoinette Snyman, a spokeswoman for Eastern Bus Lines, said one of the company’s buses had been carrying the contract workers to a tree plantation at nearby Lochiel early in the morning when it crashed into the dam.
