Thurl Bailey, Jazz, picking up the slack left when Karl Malone was ejected three minutes into the game, scored a career-high 41 points - including 16 of Utah’s final 19 - and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Jazz to a 116-115 victory at Denver. Bailey was 17-for-27 from the field. TRAIL BLAZER

Clyde Drexler of Portland, who averaged 28.7 points in three Trail Blazers victories last week, was honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season. Drexler, fifth in the league with a 26.9 average, also averaged 6.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists and three steals. PASSING FANCY

John Stockton of the Jazz had 20 assists Monday against Denver, the third time this season he’s had at least that many in a game. Earlier this season, the Utah guard had successive 21-assist efforts against the Los Angeles Clippers. Stockton leads the league with an average of 12.5 assists per game and has averaged over 15 feeds per game in his last 21 contests.

Along with his playmaking heroics, Stockton connected on 10-of-14 shots from the field and scored 24 points. SHOOTING STARS

New Jersey guard Otis Birdsong was 12-for-15 from the field Monday and scored 25 points, but the Nets still lost, 115-105, to the Los Angeles Lakers at The Forum ... Larry Nance of Cleveland was 10-for-14 against the Knicks, but New York beat the Cavaliers 104-102. SUPER SUB

Adrian Dantley, relegated to a reserve role for Detroit since his return from an injury, connected on 8-of-11 shots Monday in the Pistons’ 109-97 victory over Sacramento. Michael Adams of Denver equaled the record established by Boston’s Danny Ainge earlier this season when he hit a 3-point field goal for the 23rd consecutive game Monday night against Utah. Adams also set a league mark with 15 3-point attempts in the game, breaking the mark of 13 set by John Roche, also of the Nuggets, in January, 1982. New York swingman Johnny Newman, who was 11-for-11 from the field in a game against Boston earlier this season, was 1-for-11 Monday against Cleveland. Teammate Mark Jackson, meanwhile, was 6-for-27 as the Knicks shot 37-for-95 in their 104-102 victory. Minus Newman and Jackson, who combined to shoot 18.4 percent, the Knicks were 30-for-57 from the field, or 52.6 percent. CHARITY CASE

Washington center Moses Malone outscored San Antonio 20-15 from the free throw line Monday in the Bullets’ 112-106 victory. Malone made 20-of-22 free throws - the Spurs were just 15-for-27. The performance marked the second time this season that the Bullets center has made 20 free throws in a game. Malone was 20-for-23 on opening night against the New York Knicks. STREAKS
