2 rescued after car plunges into river

July 3, 2019

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont couple is safe after their car went down an embankment and into the Passumpsic River.

The Caledonian Record reports that 74-year-old William Goff, of St. Johnsbury, pulled into the Twin State Ford/Quick Lane parking lot on Tuesday afternoon but as he went to stop, he hit the accelerator instead.

He swerved to avoid hitting a truck in the lot, sending the car down an embankment and into the river.

Goff said he and his wife saw two men up on the bank and yelled to them. He said the auto technicians waded out into the water and pulled them both out.

The car was eventually pulled out by a second tow company, after the first one failed.
