Denver settles with man jailed after unable to pay fee
DENVER (AP) — Denver has settled a lawsuit by a man who his attorney says was jailed for five days because he couldn’t afford to pay a $50 administrative fee.
The Denver Post reports attorney Rebecca Wallace says the city settled with Mickey Howard last week, agreeing to a “meaningful monetary payment” and to no longer hold inmates who paid bond but cannot pay the fee.
Wallace declined to disclose the settlement amount.
The Denver City Attorney’s civil litigation office did not immediately return the newspaper’s call.
According to the lawsuit, Howard was booked into jail in June on charges of domestic violence and public intoxication. He paid $10 bail and a $30 fee for fingerprinting and a mug shot but couldn’t afford the $50 bail fee.
Charges against him were later dismissed.
