Western NY salt mine expanding rail line, adding 55 jobs
MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo says a western New York salt mine’s extension of its rail system will create dozens of new jobs and retain 300 at the operation.
Cuomo announced Tuesday that American Rock Salt’s $2 million project will extend its rail line by 1,500 feet at the company’s mine in the Livingston County town of Mount Morris, 30 miles south of Rochester.
The move will add 55 new positions at what is considered the largest operating salt mine in the United States.
The company’s mine just off Interstate 390 produces between 10,000 and 18,000 tons of salt a day that’s used to de-ice roads.
American Rock Salt is also moving a recently acquired company, Vaporizer, from Central Village, Connecticut, to Mount Morris. Vaporizer is a supplier of ice-melting products.
