Sound Tigers All-Star Dal Colle heads back up to Islanders

February 1, 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — It’s not a bad time to be Michael Dal Colle.

His offseason work has turned his third pro season into a breakout year. He has earned time in the NHL with the New York Islanders, who called him and Devon Toews back up from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Thursday after their all-star break.

And on Jan. 17, he scored his first NHL goal, at the front of the net to deflect in a shot from another former Bridgeport Sound Tiger, Scott Mayfield, against New Jersey.

“You dream of that moment as a kid,” Dal Colle said earlier this week, when he represented Bridgeport at the AHL’s all-star weekend along with Sebastian Aho. “It was really special for my family watching back home.

“You start playing this game at 4 years old, it’s something you always think of. ... For that to finally come to fruition feels great.”

Dal Colle has 28 points in 29 games for the Sound Tigers this year. The fifth pick in the 2014 NHL draft has also played 13 NHL games this season, often on the left wing on a line with Valtteri Filppula and Leo Komarov.

“I’ve got some chemistry up top with Fil and Leo. They’re two easy guys to play with,” Dal Colle said. “They seem to always be in the right spots. The more you’re up there, the more confidence you get. I think that shows in my game.”

The Islanders sent him down for the NHL all-star break, and he played for Bridgeport on Saturday against Lehigh Valley. The Phantoms return to Bridgeport on Friday night.

It’s also a good time to be Michael Dal Colle because, well, it often is at this time of year: He’s a big fan of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, who have won five Super Bowl championships in his lifetime. How’s he feeling about Sunday?

“I don’t want to be overly confident, but I’m feeling pretty good,” Dal Colle said.

“I thought the Saints, obviously, got robbed, so maybe it’s meant to be the Rams’ year. A lot of people are saying that. But you never bet against Tom.”
