LONDON (AP) _ Scottish and Southern Energy PLC said Monday it had ended negotiations about the possible acquisition of part of TXU’s European energy operations.
Scottish and Southern Energy was responding to published reports that it was competing with Powergen, a unit of the German company E.ON, to buy TXU’s energy operations in Britain.
Powergen declined to comment Monday on the reports.
Dallas-based TXU’s European subsidiary owns the former Eastern and Norweb regional supply companies in Britain as well as three large coal-fired power stations. Operating as TXU Energi, the company supplies gas and electricity to around 5.5 million British homes and businesses, and employs 1,600 people.
On Sunday, TXU spokeswoman Carol Peters refused to comment on reports on the possible sale of its British operations. ``When we have something to announce, we will let you know,″ she said.
