Armed Bandit Robs Train at Intersection
PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) _ A gunman wearing a bandanna reminiscent of Old West-era bandits hopped aboard a stopped Conrail freight train, robbed the crew and fled on foot before dawn Saturday, a sheriff’s dispatcher said.
The man reportedly wore a red or blue handkerchief tied around his head and partially concealing his face, said Gale Zelms, a dispatcher for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. No one was injured, she said.
Armed with a shotgun, the man boarded the freight train at 4:50 a.m. and robbed two crew members of their personal belongings, said Conrail spokeswoman Barbara Vasco. She said it was not known what was taken.
The 60-car train from Chicago to Newark, N.J., had stopped to check an air leak, the sheriff’s department said. Ms. Vasco said the train was carrying miscellaneous consumer goods.
