Sosa Hits Home Run No. 63
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Sammy Sosa homered for the first time in 18 at-bats, hitting No. 63 shortly after Mark McGwire hit his 65th in the Cubs-Cardinals game Sunday.
Sosa hit a three-run shot to left in the third inning off St. Louis’ right-hander Larry Luebbers.
Sosa and McGwire have homered 42 times on the same day the last two seasons, but this was only the fifth time they had homered in head-to-head competition.
Sosa, who led the home run derby 59-54 on Sept. 9, connected about a half-hour after McGwire homered for the sixth time in seven games in the first inning.
Sosa’s last homer was Sept. 28 against Philadelphia against Anthony Shumaker. He has 30 homers on the road, one fewer than his club record set last year.
