PARIS (AP) — Cameroon striker Karl Toko-Ekambi has been voted African player of the year in the French league after scoring 17 goals with Angers.

The 25-year-old player has been awarded the the Marc-Vivien Foe prize ahead of Tunisia striker Wahbi Khazri and Burkina Faso forward Bertrand Traore.

Toko-Ekambi, who won the African Cup of Nations last year with Cameroon, succeeds Ivory Coast midfielder Jean Michael Seri.

The prize was named after the late Foe, the popular Cameroon player and two-time African champion who collapsed and died on a field in France in 2003 while playing for his country.
