Exeter Man Charged With Shooting His Daughter’s Boyfriend
West Pittston police arrested an Exeter man Thursday night for shooting his daughter’s boyfriend.
Police charged Gary Patrick, 69, of Packer Avenue, Exeter, with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person for allegedly shooting Wayne Tilley in the stomach outside his home on Foundry Street in West Pittston.
According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to Foundry Street just after 9:30 p.m. for a reported gunshot victim.
Patrick told investigators that he and his wife decided to check on their daughter Christina Appel at 846 Foundry St., where she resides with Tilley, because he was concerned that she was being physically abused.
Police found Patrick laying on the ground with his arms stretched out in front of his vehicle and he told them, “He’s been raping her. He’s been hurting the baby.”
Officers observed Tilley laying in the yard on his left side, holding his stomach and bleeding. He told police that Patrick shot him and officers recovered a 380 semi-automatic handgun on the porch.
While he was outside 850 Foundry St., Patrick said Tilley came outside with his grandchild who he threw into the vehicle.
Patrick also told police that Tilley was going to break his arm when he drew his handgun and shot him.
Other witnesses said Patrick pulled the child into the vehicle away from Tilley. They also said that Patrick threatened to kill Tilley before and after firing his weapon.
Tilley was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Twp. where he was taken into emergency surgery.
Magisterial District Judge David Barilla Jr. arraigned Patrick Friday morning and he was jailed in Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing for Patrick is scheduled for May 30 at 9:30 a.m. at Luzerne County Central Court.
