OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Cory Lidle, in his first outing since returning from a three-game suspension, pitched two-hit ball for seven innings Friday night and led the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the Oakland Athletics 4-0.

Lidle was penalized for taking part in a brawl against Boston on Aug. 29. He helped the Devil Rays beat Oakland for only the third time in their last 16 meetings.

Lidle (2-5) struck out two and walked two. He began the game with an 8.07 ERA in his other seven starts this season.

Doug Creek completed the combined two-hitter, striking out four for his first major league save. This was his 110th career relief appearance in the big leagues.

Gil Heredia (14-10) lost despite pitching a five-hitter. He walked none and struck out four in his second complete game of the season.

Tampa Bay scored two unearned runs in the fourth and Greg Vaughn hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

With two outs in the fourth, left fielder Adam Piatt nearly collided with shortstop Miguel Tejada and then dropped Vaughn's fly ball for an error, allowing a run to score. Vinny Castilla doubled to drive in Vaughn.

Vaughn hit his 26th homer with two outs in the ninth.
