No. 2 Kansas 76, Santa Clara 64

November 23, 1996

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Jerod Haase scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half, and No. 2 Kansas pulled away for a 76-64 win over Santa Clara on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Raef LaFrentz added 17 and Paul Pierce 16 points for the Jayhawks, who remained unbeaten in four meetings with Santa Clara. Kansas finished the Broncos’ season last spring by defeating them in a second-round NCAA tournament game.

Marlon Garnett had 20 points to lead Santa Clara, while Todd Wuschnig added 11.

Brian Jones, just the third true freshman to start a season-opening game at Santa Clara since 1976-77, had eight points in his debut. Jones replaced former Santa Clara star Steve Nash, now with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns

Santa Clara began last season by upsetting fourth-ranked UCLA, but couldn’t start this year in the same fashion, wearing down against a Kansas team that returned all five starters from last year’s Big Eight Conference championship squad. The Jayhawks played without All-America guard Jacque Vaughn, sidelined by a right wrist injury.
