How do you spell relief? ‘Excelsior!’ Grierson wins marathon spelling bee
There’s a rhythm to the way Sophia Grierson spells — a syncopated tapping of the foot and miming of the letters being typed on a keyboard — that must be the Ludington Area Catholic School eighth-grader’s secret weapon.
For the second year in a row, Grierson won the Ludington Daily News Community Spelling Bee Tuesday, and now she’s bound once again for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held in Washington, D.C. this spring.
The final two spellers — Grierson and LAC seventh-grader Jack Jubar, who won third place at last year’s bee — kept up the tension in the final round, volleying for almost two hours before a winner was determined.
Jubar was finally undone by “assiduously.”
When Grierson correctly spelled “excelsior,” she officially became the champion for the second time.
