French team wins rugby league’s Challenge Cup for 1st time

August 25, 2018

LONDON (AP) — The French anthem rang out around Wembley Stadium after Catalans Dragons became the first non-British winners of rugby league’s Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The Perpignan-based team beat Warrington 20-14 in only its second appearance in the final of the knockout competition organized by England’s Rugby Football League. Clubs from Wales, Scotland, Canada and France also enter.

Captain Remi Casty hopes the Dragons winning makes “young kids want to be professional to create more good players in France and a better competition over there.”

The Dragons are the only team from outside northern England playing in the Super League and only just avoided relegation in 2017.

The Challenge Cup was launched in season 1896-97.
