Heard on the Street: Proposed Rochester gun club files for building permit

November 28, 2018

Almost two years after the project was first proposed, a building permit for a new Southwest Rochester gun club was filed this week.

Heartland Gun Club & Range, led by Twin Cities developer Pat Egan, filed to build a $2.25 million “next generation firearms club providing a unique, upscale environment for owners of firearms and shooting enthusiasts” at 5105 Commercial Drive SW.

Commercial Drive runs along the west side of U.S. Highway 63 South, south of Shoppes on Maine. That puts the planned gun club near Southwest Storage and the Viking Electric distribution center.

The Heartland project started moving ahead in early 2017 when Rochester Gun Club LLC purchased 2 acres of open land on Commercial Drive for $500,000 from Waterfront Business Park, owned by Rochester developer Rick Penz. Nathan Woodworth, of Winona, an investor in Heartland, orchestrated the original land purchase.

The next step was Heartland Rochester Real Estate LLC, led by Pat Egan, purchasing the land from Rochester Gun Club for $625,000 in February 2018.

Now a city permit for a “new single story gun club with shooting range, lounge, classroom, retail and meeting rooms” is in the pipeline.

Heartland’s website describes the club as an indoor shooting range with eight public lanes and four private lanes.

It’s unclear when construction could start on the site.
