Florida jury convicts man in woman’s 1990 slaying
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida jury has convicted a man in the 1990 slaying of a woman who suffocated after assailants bound her face with a towel and duct tape during a home burglary.
Shortly after the guilty verdict Friday, news outlets report that a judge sentenced 52-year-old Jefer Negron to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Investigators say Negron was one of three men involved in the November 1990 death in Lake Worth of 26-year-old Minerva Cantu, a mother of two children.
DNA evidence from under Cantu’s fingernails led to Negron’s arrest in 2016. Negron maintains his innocence and plans to appeal.
When the crime occurred, Cantu’s daughter was at school and her then-18-month-old son was in a crib nearby. Both were in court for Friday’s verdict.
