October siren test canceled
Region 21 Emergency Management has announced that outdoor tornado siren tests for October will be canceled.
In a press release, Tim Newman, emergency management director said tests would be canceled due to cold temperatures and cloudy conditions expected at the normal testing time of 10 a.m. The test will not be rescheduled and the next test will be in March for the Severe Weather Awareness Week statewide tornado drill.
Newman explained that the sirens are not tested when temperatures are below freezing is that if there was water in the moving parts and it froze, it could cause gears to jam or belts to be brittle.
“We do not want to take the risk of breaking something unless we have to (for a real event, for instance),” he said.
