BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts wildlife officials are urging people to be extra vigilant during the state's first ever Youth Deer Hunt Day.

Saturday offers a special hunting opportunity aimed at introducing young people to hunting before the state's regular deer hunting season gets underway.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is cautioning young hunters to wear blaze orange and be extra aware of the hikers, campers and others sharing the woods in autumn.

Officials say up to 1,000 young people are expected to take advantage of the specially designed one-day season and secure permits enabling them to hunt.
