Dow Jones Closes Above 2,700 for First Time
NEW YORK (AP) _ Investors pushed up the prices of blue chip stocks Monday, driving the Dow Jones industrial average to its first close above 2,700 just a week after it passed the 2,600 level.
Despite the surge by the Dow industrials, however, some broader measures of stock market trends showed little change or were lower in a mixed session. Slightly more issues fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
The Dow industrials rose 15.14 points to finish the day at a record 2,700.57, giving it a gain of nearly 805 points since the year began.
The Dow industrials had crossed 2,700 briefly on Thursday and Friday before slipping back at the end of each session, but it still racked up a record rise of 93.43 points for the week.
The market’s best known barometer closed above the 2,600 mark for the first time on Aug. 10, when it jumped 43.84 points to 2,635.84.
