Brexit’s Farage Raises Money For Barletta Campaign
HARVEYS LAKE — Supporters of Lou Barletta’s Senate campaign hit the lake Friday night for a fundraiser with the candidate and Nigel Farage, a British ally of President Donald Trump and a leading advocate of the 2016 Brexit vote.
“I’m excited to be here to support Lou. It’s going to be an exciting campaign,” Luzerne County Republican Vice Chairwoman Lynette Villano said.
Barletta, a Republican congressman from Hazleton, is trying to unseat Scranton Democrat Bob Casey from the U.S. Senate.
Villano, a West Pittston resident, and several others were getting on a shuttle bus around 6 p.m. Friday in the Our Lady of Victory Church parking lot. From there, they went to the fundraiser at a private residence along Harveys Lake.
“Absolutely interested,” Villano said about seeing Farage. “It isn’t every day you meet a foreign leader.”
After the U.K. voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, Trump introduced Farage as “the man behind Brexit” at a rally in Mississippi. Farage has denied reports he could be a “person of interest” in the investigation of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
“Congressman Barletta’s decision to fundraise with white nationalist Nigel Farage is the latest in a long history of associating with extremists,” Casey campaign spokesman Max Steele said.
Barletta campaign spokesman David Jackson said Friday’s fundraiser “was a great event” and attendance and the amount of funds raised exceeded campaign goals.
“We would like to thank the Casey campaign for their assistance in promoting the event through their ridiculous and irrational public tantrums. We hope they keep it up,” Jackson said.
Law enforcement officers were very visible patrolling around the lake Friday night. State police troopers and officers from Harveys Lake, Forty Fort, Jackson Twp., Lehman Twp., Dallas and Dallas Twp. were present on and by Lakeside Drive.
