Aging equipment forces Utah city to close fire department

November 10, 2017

SUNSET CITY, Utah (AP) — The small northern Utah city of Sunset City is shuttering its fire department and contracting with a larger fire department after not having enough money to replace aging equipment that caused a delayed response at a fire that killed two people.

KUTV reports that at the fire in February, the city’s volunteer fire department was delayed in its response to the house that was just more than one block away because a fire engine wouldn’t start.

The engine’s failure meant the nearest working truck was about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away in Clinton.

The Sunset City Council decided a few months later that it was time to close the department and contract with the North Davis Fire District.

City officials said a lack of funds led to the decision.
