Man’s hand nearly severed in alleged home invasion in Ona
ONA, W.Va. — A dispute Tuesday morning between two men living in the same Ona neighborhood led to one of them having his hand nearly severed.
Sgt. K.A. White II, with the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department, said it happened around 9:30 a.m. when one of the men involved in the incident came to the home of the other man and kicked in the door. That’s when the resident living in the home, located in the 3400 block of Blue Sulphur Garden Road, used a machete and nearly chopped off the hand of the suspect of the alleged home invasion, White said.
“There was some sort of business transaction that we are not sure of all the details, but we don’t think it was a drug deal,” White said at the scene. “He went to the home to confront the guy and was told he wasn’t home. From what we can tell at this time, it appears he kicked in the door, advanced into the house toward the resident and that is when he hit him in hand with a machete. He also had a cut on his head and arm.”
White said the alleged home invasion suspect fled the scene, running to his mobile home across the road leaving a trail of blood along the way.
“There was lots of blood,” White said. “His hand was cut pretty bad, and he was also bleeding from his head and arm. He was transported to the hospital.”
White said machete was taken into evidence and the investigation of the incident is ongoing.
“It appears at this point to be a case of self-defense, so we aren’t releasing the names of the men involved at this time due to the ongoing investigation,” he said. “We don’t know if anyone will be charged at this point.”
Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said if the investigation concludes that the incident was a home invasion, the suspect would be facing charges.
