NEWTON, Iowa (AP) _ Maytag Corp. has announced plans to expand operations in Reynosa, Mexico, by buying a second production facility.

The new plant, expected to be ready for operation during the fourth quarter, will handle the production of parts for various Maytag appliances. Maytag began operating its first such subassembly operation in Mexico in the first quarter of this year.

``Our expansion in Reynosa is a logical extension of our ongoing cost reduction initiatives in manufacturing, procurement and distribution,″ said William L. Beer, major appliance division president.

Maytag Corp. is a leading producer of home appliances including laundry, refrigeration, cooking products and dishwashers. They are sold to customers throughout North America and in international markets under several brand names including Maytag, Amana and Jenn-Air.

Maytag shares declined $1.16 to close Wednesday at $39.96 on the New York Stock Exchange.
