Freshman Haiby sparks rally, but Razorback women hold on for victory

December 20, 2018

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Nebraska erased a nine-point deficit in the final 4½ minutes, but Arkansas scored the final five points to earn an 84-80 victory Tuesday night in women’s basketball.

Freshman guard Sam Haiby led the Huskers with 16 points, including seven as they turned a 77-68 deficit into an 80-79 lead with 1:04 to go. But the Razorbacks (9-3) responded with a basket 20 seconds later by guard Chelsea Dungee (23 points), then hit three free throws to secure the victory.

Haiby “played very, very well in that fourth quarter, and really the ballgame,” NU coach Amy Williams said on the Husker Sports Network. “I thought she really sparked us.”

Fellow freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek added 14 points for NU.

The Huskers are 5-6 entering Big Ten play, which begins Dec. 28 at home against Michigan.

“This has been a very challenging nonconference schedule,” Williams said. “Obviously we’re not coming out of this with the record we’d like. But I think it can really pay off for us eventually if we can stick with the process and stay positive.”
